After an international friendly against Montipiller and after sending Jimmy Nielsen, Aurelien Collin, and Graham Zusi to the MLS All-Star Game, Sporting KC played the Columbus Crew. Despite losing the game, 2-1, Sporting KC put up a great performance against the Crew; owning possession 69% to the Crew’s 31% and having 25 shots compared to the Crew’s 12. On paper, Sporting should have won the game, but the game is not played on paper and Sporting will have to play their hearts out in New England in order to earn back the first place spot in the Eastern conference.
All three goals came in the first half, with the first coming in the 8th minute when Graham Zusi delivered an amazing cross in which Kei Kamara headed into the goal. The last goal came in the 33rd when Jario Arrieta delivered another bullet from 25 yards out.
The second half brought three yellow cards to the Columbus Crew, with the first coming the in the 74th when Chris Birchall fouled Kei Kamara. Then in the 94th, Cole Grossman conceded a yellow for a hard foul on Paulo Nagamura. Less than a minute later, Grossman conceded a red card for another hard foul on Graham Zusi.
Sporting KC will now play Stroke City FC on August 1st and the New England Revolution August 4th. Then they will come back to Kansas City and play the US Open Cup against the Seattle Sounders on August 8th and DC United on August 11th.
