Could it be Six? The Mavericks Win Six in a Row Destroy the Sun Dogs

The Missouri Mavericks played the Arizona Sun Dogs on Friday night. Some people speculated that the Mavericks would not win the game, since they had not played in six days, but they destroyed the Sun Dogs with a 7-3 win. With the win, the Mavericks extended their winning streak to six games. Scott Hillman’s thoughts on the match were,

 “I think the guys are just baring down and working hard, we are happy with this win and win streak…We are always happy to win and win big at home.”

 The first period was great for the Mavericks and awful for the Sundogs. The first goal came, in the 6th minute, on an amazing wrist-shot by Andrew Courtney. Brandon Smith assisted the goal. The next goal for the Mavericks came, in the 7th minute, on a Sebastian Thinel slap shot. Blake Forsyth and Podge Turnbull assisted with the goal. Arizona scored their first and only goal of the first period in the 14th minute. Christian Nehring scored the goal, Derek Leblanc assisted and brought the score to 2-1. It did not stop there though.  In the 16th minute, Podge Turnbull scored the Mavericks third goal, on a power play.  The goal could not have happened without a great pass by Jeff Pierce. The fourth goal came on John Scott-Dickson’s backhander and was assisted by Podge Turnbull. The final goal came, with 40 seconds left, when Brandon Smith shot and scored.  In the 2nd period both the Mavericks and the Sun Dogs added on two more goals each. The first goal came for the Sun Dogs and was scored by Derek Leblanc on a penalty shot. Missouri scored the next goal, in the 14th minute, when Evan Vossen scored and Podge Turnbull assisted the goal. Riley Emmerson and Austin Smith dropped the gloves and dished it out in the 14th minute. Emmerson won the fight but was sent to the sin bin for five minutes. Arizona then scored, in the 16th minute, when Josh Morgan found the net after a good pass by Nate Player. The Mavericks scored their second goal, in the 16th minute as well, when Kenton Miller shot and scored. Sebastian Thinel assisted the goal. The second period ended in a 7-3 lead for the Mavericks.

 Before the start of the final period, Scott Hillman, made a goalkeeper change. Hillman replaced Mike Clemente with Austin Lee.  This decision gave Lee experience and Lee allowed no goals. The Mavericks didn’t score any goals in the third period but still won the game 7-3 extending their win streak to six games, tying their record for consecutive wins.

The three stars of the game were: 3rd Star – Brandon Smith, 2nd Star – Sebastian Thinel, and 1st Star -Podge Turnbull. The next game for the Mavericks comes on Saturday against the Bloomington Blaze at the Independence Events Center.
