On Saturday night the Missouri Mavericks played their third game in three nights against the Quad City Mallards at the Independence Events Center. The Mavericks won 3-2 but the game included five fights and 30 penalties.  Coach Scott Hillman’s thoughts on the win were,

“Well, we are real proud of the guys. It’s playing four games in five nights in four different cities and unless you played with this amount of physicality you can’t understand how hard it was to win this game.”

The first period was packed full of action including three fights and one goal. The first fight came, in the 11th minute, when David Simoes took on Mitch McColm. David Simoes won the fight after one punch and the two were sent to the sin bin. The 14th minute featured two fights.  The first was fought between Blake Forsyth and Bob Preece.  Forsyth was knocked down by Preece and lost the fight. The second fight came just seconds later and was fought between Dave Pszenyczny and Anthony Pedicaro. Pszenyczny won the fight after four punches but was sent off from the game. The only goal was scored by the Mallards, in the 17th minute by Mickey Lang and was assisted by Matt Duffy and Jeremy Boyer. Three minutes later the first period ended in favor of the Mallards, 1-0.

The second period was the Mavericks’ period, as they scored two goals. The equalizing goal came, in the 3rd minute, when Podge Turnbull shot and scored after a great pass from Brandon Smith and John Scott Dickson. Turnbull’s thoughts on his goal were,

“It felt good. It was good to hear a lot of noise when we scored and I was happy I got it out of the way.”

The second goal came, in 8th minute, on an amazing wrist shot by Andrew Courtney. The goal couldn’t have been scored without an excellent pass from Sebastian Thinel. Thirteen minutes later the second period ended with the Mavericks winning 2-1.

The third period brought a boatload of tension between the Mallards and the Mavericks.  There were two fights and two goals. The first fight happened, in the sixth minute, and was fought between Obi Aduba and Matt McCready. Aduba won the fight taking down McCready but they both had to serve five minutes in the sin bin. Shortly after the fight, the Missouri Mavericks scored their third goal of the game. The goal was scored by John Scott-Dickson and was assisted by Podge Turnbull. In the 9th minute, Matt Boyd and Blake Forsyth threw down the gloves and went at it. Forsyth won the fight after taking down Boyd but they were both sent to the penalty box for five minutes. The Mallards, Mike Hellyer scored with less than one minute left in the game decresing the Mavericks lead to one.  Coach Scott Hillman’s thoughts on the physical game and tension between the Mallards and the Mavericks were,

“It was a pretty good build.  It was the fourth time we have played them in about 15 or 16 days, so last night we felt some of our players took a little liberty and just seemed to get the emotions running higher right from the drop of the puck. We haven’t had many fights and there is about five or six between two teams in two nights.  So hopefully everyone has got it out of their systems.”

The game ended in a 3-2 win for the Mavericks, extending the Maverick win streak to five games in a row. The three stars were: 3rd Star –  Mike Clemente, 2nd Star –  Podge Turnbull and the 1st star – John Scott-Dickson
