Sporting Breaks the Streak, but Not in the Way You Think

After a disappointing three game losing streak, Sporting KC went into Dick’s Sporting Good Park looking for a win against the Colorado Rapids. The game looked as if Sporting KC would get their first win in three weeks after two amazing goals from Teal Bunbury. The first goal came in the first minute, when Seth Sinovic delivered a well-timed pass from the corner; Teal Bunbury headed the ball into the goal. “I thought the first goal was actually beautiful. Great build up. Very good movement of the ball by a lot of different guys…” The first opportunity for the Colorado Rapids to score came in the 12th minute when Connor Casey played the ball after Aurelien Collin made a mistake. Casey then shot but Jimmy Nielsen caught the ball. Less then two minutes later, in the 14th minute, Teal Bunbury made a soft shot for a goal extending the lead to 2-0. In the 24th minute Jimmy Nielsen, after a punch that didn’t go anywhere, made a huge save to keep the game at 2-0. Aurelien Collin made a great slide tackle on Tony Cascio in the 41st minute. After three minutes of added time in the first half, neither Sporting KC nor the Colorado Rapids could get anything done.

Coming out of the locker room, manager Peter Vermes commented, “Obviously we knew that they were going to come. They were going to come with everything they had…” Sporting KC started with the ball in the second half but got it stolen quickly. Then in the 51st minute Bobby Convey received a yellow card for a bad foul on Martin Rivero. Rivero took a free kick that was deflected by Tyrone Marshall who headed a shot that went in for a goal. After Jacob Peterson replaced Bobby Convey in the 59th minute, Connor Casey delivered a marvelous pass to Kosuke Kimure who shot and scored, tying the game at 2-2. In the 68th minute Edu replaced Connor Casey who looked exhausted. Seconds later Paluo Nagamura shot a ball that went just wide of the net. Using their second substitution, in the 76th, Sporting KC put in Peterson Joseph for Paluo Nagamura. In the 79th minute the Colorado Rapids used their second sub as well when Kamani Hill was put in for Wells Thompson. Then in the 85th minute Edu, of the Colorado Rapids, had the opportunity for a game-winning goal but could not convert because Jimmy Nielsen blocked it. The final subs for both teams were put in at the 87th minute with Lawerence Olum replacing Julio Cesar and Luis Zapata going in for Tony Cascio. Sporting KC could not covert with after four minutes of added time.  The game ended in a tie at 2-2.
