Battling for the fourth place playoff spot and home-field advantage in the playoffs, the Mavericks were desperately looking for a win over the Denver Cutthroats. They found the 6-4 win they needed and are only three wins away from clinching the fourth place spot in the CHL standings. After the stellar performance by the Mavericks, fans called this game the best win in a long time, Scott Hillman had some happy thoughts on this game too saying,

“We want to play with this same intensity the rest of the season. We desperately needed two points tonight and the boys went out and got them. We haven’t been playing like a team contending for a playoff berth, and that’s bothered the captain (Thinel). I’m sure he’s happy with the way we played tonight.”

During the first period, the Mavericks scored two goals while only allowing one. The Mavericks first goal came just 3:45 into the game on a  Kenton Miller wrist-shot that flew past Kent Patterson.  The goal could not have happened though without the help of Kellen Tochkin. After this first goal, the Mavericks offense sparked. The Mavericks scored again in the 7th minute, this goal was scored by Andrew Courtney after Sebastian Thinel and he were able to get a 2-1 break. Courtney tucked the puck in the bottom of the net for the goal. Just two minutes later, the Denver Cutthroats scored their first goal. The goal was scored by Phil Tesoriero and assisted by Brad Smyth and Joel Chouinard.

Being up 2-1 at the start of the second period, the Mavericks knew they couldn’t let this lead slip away. Andrew Courtney scored his goal, just 30 seconds into play, after a set-up feed from Ryan Jardine. At the 10:30 mark in the second period, Dave Pszenyczny and Mario Boilard dropped the gloves and destroyed each other. Pszenyczny won the fight, dropping Boilard ten seconds after the fight started. Four minutes later, the Cutthroats’ Joel Chouinard scored on a  slap-shot. The goal was assisted by Troy Schawb and Brad Smyth.

The Mavericks were still leading going into the third and the game was just getting good. Less than three minutes into the third, Kenton Miller scored his second goal of the game after rebounding a Ryan Jardine shot. The Mavericks just kept adding on goals. In the thirteenth minute, Andrew Courtney scored his third goal of the game and the fans sent the hats flying. This goal was assisted by Sebastian Thinel and Brandon Smith. With 1:30 left in the game, Evan Vossen scored the Mavericks sixth goal of the game on an empty net from center-ice. Denver’s Luke Fulghum scored two goals with less then thirty seconds left in the period. The Mavericks came away with a 6-4 win.

This was definitely a good game and the fans seemed very happy about the performance by the Mavericks. The Mavs play the Cutthroats again on Friday in a rematch that will make or break both teams’ season. If the Mavs win, the team would be just two points from the fourth place position but if they lose, the Cutthroats will take over the Mavericks’ spot at fifth place. Friday’s game is another must-win for the Mavericks and it should be a good rematch.
