On Saturday, the Mavericks took on the Quad City Mallards for third time in eight days. After a tough weekend against them last week, the Mavericks were looking for a big win over the Mallards to clinch a playoff spot and gain some revenge. The Mavericks did just that winning 3-1 over the Mallards and clinching a playoff spot. Mavericks goalie, Mike Clemente was unstoppable. Clemente stopped 31 of the 32 shots taken by the Mallards for a 96% save percentage, possibly the best performance by Clemmers since early February. Once again the offense proved to be pivotal in the game, having a successful first and second period that topped the Mallards.
Two goals were scored during the first period of play and both were scored by the Mavericks. The first came 15:55 into the period when Kenton Miller took a wrist-shot that sailed into the goal. The goal could not have happened without a great set-up from Colt King. Less then two minutes later, Brandon Smith scored a back-handed goal that flew past, Mallards goaltender, Neil Conway. This goal was assisted by Evan Vossen and John Scott-Dickson. The period ended a minute later with the Mavericks leading 2-0.
The Mavericks only managed to score one goal during the second period. That goal came 5:41 into play and was scored by Sebastian Thinel when he shot the puck through Neil Conway’s five-hole. The Mavericks had a 3-0 lead before the Quad City Mallards scored their first goal in the 14th minute of the third period. The Quad City goal was scored by Matt Duffy and assisted by Obi Aduba and Anthony Pedicaro.
Nearing the end of the game, Jason Dixon and Blake Forsyth got into a scuffle after Dixon knocked down Mike Clemente. Kyle Hood tried to break-up the scramble but Obi Aduba stopped Hood and both got into a fight. Three penalties were handed out in the scramble. Kyle Hood and Obi Aduba received matching roughing minors and Blake Forsyth received an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty. The end of the game came shortly after this scuffle with the Mavericks on top 3-1.
The Mavericks travel today to Quad City to take on the Mallards for the 12th and final time this season. The Mavericks look to continue their winning streak against the Mallards and have no reason why they can’t, so be looking for another win today.
