Mavericks Extinguish the Blaze 6-3

The Mavericks traveled to Bloomington on Sunday to take on the Blaze. The game was the Mavericks third in 72 hours and they definitely looked tired.  Even with the tired legs, the Mavericks won 6-3 over the Blaze extending their record against the Blaze to 6-2-0.

“That was a great team effort,” said Mavericks’ head coach Scott Hillman. “Everyone in the lineup had a big game for us, and it was a good four-point weekend.

Unlike many other games, the first period was action packed with four goals being scored. The first came 10:42 into the period when Colt King broke away and scored an unassisted goal.  At the 16:30 mark in the first period, David Gilbert scored the Blaze’s first goal on a power play. The goal was assisted by Jon Booras. Just 24 seconds after the original goal, Steve Makway shot and scored the second goal of the game for the Blaze. Once again the goal came on the power play and was assisted by Kyle Bochek. The Mavericks tied the game up with just 2:43 left in the period, when Kellen Tochkin received a superb pass Kenton Miller.

Tied 2-2, the Mavericks knew they needed to pick up the pace. They did just that and more scoring twice and only allowing one goal.  That goal came just 1:54 into the second period and was Brett Lutes. It was another power play goal and was assisted by Steve Makway. The Mavericks struck 40 seconds later when Kenton Miller scored after a great pass from Dave Pszenyczny. The first and only fight of the game came with 4:13 left in the period when Riley Emmerson and Aaron Dawson got into a scrap. Emmerson threw down Dawson and threw some nasty punches. Both were sent off for fighting. Thirty seconds later, the Mavericks Trevor Kell shot and hit the bottom right corner for a goal. Sebastian Thinel and Kellen Tochkin assisted the goal.

The Mavericks continued their success into the third period when they scored two goals and allowed none. The fifth Maverick goal of the game came 6:24 into the period and was scored by Kellen Tochkin. Sebastian Thinel assisted the goal. The Mavericks capped the game off in the 8th minute when Colt King scored after rebounding Kellen Tochkin’s shot. Twelve minutes later, the game ended with the Mavericks on top 6-3.
