Rapid City Finds Revenge in Game 2

After a great win the night before, the Missouri Mavericks and the Rapid City Rush played game number two. The Mavericks wanted to take the series but failed to do so losing 5-2. Ultimately, the Mavericks lost because of some very poor play and turning the puck over at least 15 times. The Mavericks have a lot of talent but did not look ready to play when the puck dropped in the first period. They were slow and could not keep up with the Rush. Another reason the Mavericks lost was due to the Rush goalie, Danny Battochio who was almost unstoppable. Battochio stopped 29 of the 31 shots made by the Mavericks and some of them were really good scoring opportunities.

The Rush owned the first period scoring two goals on 11 shots. The first goal came 5:16 into play, when Scott Wray delivered a slap-shot that just went to the left of Mike Clemente. Jared Brown assisted the goal. With just 4:10 left in the period, Andrew Courtney and Michael Couch dropped the gloves. Courtney threw repetitive punches that lead to the Couch falling onto the ice and the referees coming to break it up. Less then a minute later, with just 3:16 to go in the period, Jordan Behler found the net extending the Rush lead to two. Jesse Schultz was credited with the assist on the goal. The period ended with the Rush leading 2-0.

The Mavericks knew something had to click in the second period whether they stopped the Rush from scoring or scored themselves. Unfortunately, the Mavericks failed to score while allowing two goals. With 9:52 elapsed in the second period, Scott Brannon and Dave Pszenyczny fought. Brannon had Pszenyczny in a head lock, but Pszenyczny still was able to throw enough punches that the fight was stopped and both were sent to the penalty box for five minutes. Less then a minute later, Winston Day Chief shot and scored the Rush’s third goal of the game. David Surma assisted the goal. With 9:17 left in the second period, Riley Emmerson and Justin Sawyers fought. Emmerson fell and that ended the fight even though Emmerson wanted to fight longer. With 14:48 gone in the second period, Jesses Schultz scored his second goal of the game on a penalty shot. The goal extended the Rush’s lead to 4-0, making the game out of reach for the Mavericks.

Even with the game out of reach, the Mavericks did not give up. They found a way to score twice in the third period while only allowing Rapid City one goal. The first Mavericks goal was scored only 1:19 seconds into the third period. The goal was scored by Sebastian Thinel, aka Super Sebby, and was unassisted. With 7:32 gone in the third period, the Rush put the game away for good, when Kyle Peto scored after rebounding a David Surma shot. The Mavericks final goal came 10 seconds later when Sebastian Thinel scored again after a rebounding Andrew Courtney. The Mavericks never did find the net again and lost 5-2 but had a good performance in the third period.

If the Mavericks played the game like they did in the third period, they would have been in it, but this 5-2 loss moved them down to fourth place in the CHL standings.
