A couple big developments were announced by Sporting KC on Thursday, at the 2013 MLS Draft in Indianapolis. The first being that Sporting KC will have a new jersey sponsor, Ivy Funds. Ivy Funds is a banking and funding business based right out of Kansas City! With the excitement of the new partnership comes the question, “Will Sporting Park become Ivy Funds Sporting Park?” I don’t think so as Ivy Funds does not have the money to pay for a huge sign on the front of the park and they have already spent 2 millions dollars putting their company on the front of Sporting KC jersey.
“They offer us everything we wanted, with the key attribute being local,” said Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman. “Local was always the thing that was going to be most important to us in a jersey sponsor and then innovation. Ivy Funds has proven that they’re an innovator in their field. We wanted something that connected to our community in a large way and that’s exactly what this relationship is going to allow us to do.”
The excitement didn’t stop there, as it was announced that Sporting KC selected Mickey Lopez in the 1st round. Lopez brings a fundamentally sound soccer back to KC. Lopez will likely start the season on the Sporting KC reserve squad but Sporting KC fans can expect him to be on the starting line up at mid-season or sooner. Lopez thoughts on coming to KC are,
“I am very excited, it’s a blessing from God that I get to play with a team that I really wanted to play for. I thank them [Sporting KC] for choosing me and for believing that I can improve the team and help them this season. There is a lot of experience here and it can only help me. Hopefully, I can come in and break into the lineup as soon as possible and help them become a better team.”
With Lopez being the only pick by Sporting, in 2013, most feel like he will fit very well into the Kansas City system. On twitter, it was announced by most Sporting KC fans, that they were very excited for Lopez coming to KC and are very happy with the selection from Sporting.
