Sporting Win’s Eight isn’t it Great, Sporting KC Beat the San Jose Earthquakes

In front of 19,974 fans,their fifth sellout, Sporting KC took on the San Jose Earthquakes. The Earthquakes took the first kick and Martin Chavez took the ball down the field, shot but Jimmy Nielsen made a fantastic save. The first goal came quickly though. In the 5th minute Kei Kamara delivered a crossing pass to CJ Sapong who shot and scored for the first goal, making the score 1-0. In the 21st minute, Seth Sinovic tried to stop a ball from going out of bounds but ended up hitting the advertisement board and gashed his hand. After he went into the locker room for a further check up, Michael Harrington came in at the 22nd minute. Later Coach Peter Vermes said, “I thought Harrington did great. He didn’t get much of a warm-up because he got thrown out there, but he adapted well. Harrington has played more than enough games in regular season MLS, so I didn’t think it was big deal.” In the 29th minute, Roger Espinoza conceded a yellow card for a bad foul on a late challenge on Marvin Chavez. Justin Morrow made  a terrific slide tackle on Roger Espinoza, to stop another attack by Sporting KC, in the 31st minute. The second goal came in the 39th minute when Michael Harrington delivered a crossing pass and Kei Kamara headed it into the goal. Less than one minute later, Marvin Chavez had a dangerous shot but was once again blocked by Jimmy Nielsen. Right before halftime, in the 45th minute, Alan Gordon received a yellow card for a bad foul on Aurelien Collin. After two minutes of added time, Sporting KC led 2-0 with control of possession 52% to 48%. Graham Zusi’s thoughts on the first half were, “It was probably one of our better halves of the season. We pressured hard and didn’t give them anything. We won the 50-50 balls and counter-attacked quickly as well.”

Sporting KC had control of the ball to start the second half, the ball was then quickly stolen but brought back in favor of Sporting. In the 48th, CJ Sapong went down with an injury. Sapong quickly jumped up after being checked out by the trainer and play resumed. The third chance for the San Jose Earthquakes came in the 54th minute when Khari Stephenson shot but was blocked by Jimmy Nielsen. In the 61st minute Jason Hernandez conceded the third yellow card of the match for a bad foul on Roger Espinoza. After the foul, Caesar Diaz Pizzaro replaced Alan Gordon who, once again, did not finish a game. Ike Opara replaced Rafael Baca in the 65th minute. The Earthquakes used their third and final sub, in the 71st, when Tressor Moreno replaced Brad Ring. Then in the 72nd minute, the Earthquakes scored their first goal of the game when Simon Dawkins took a shot from the top of the box and scored, bringing the score to 2-1. Dawkins later said, “The goal came from a knockdown from Corrales. I just took a touch toward goal and whipped it top corner.” After the goal, Sporting KC used their second sub, when Lawrence Olum replaced Julio Cesar in the 73rd minute. Lawrence Olum was shown the yellow card in the 79th minute for a bad foul. Paulo Nagamura was subbed in for Roger Espinoza in the 90th minute. In the 92nd minute Jimmy Nielsen received a yellow card and the game came to an end. The game was the first win in four weeks for Sporting KC extending their record to 8-3-0.
