The Mavericks Just Keep Winning

After a strong series against the Rapid City Rush, the Mavericks began their semifinal series against the Allen Americans. As the number one seed in the playoffs, the Americans were going to be another tough opponent for the Mavericks.  The Mavericks didn’t hesitate when the puck was dropped and they came out firing. At the end of the game, the Mavericks had topped the Americans 5-1.

“The guys stay disciplined tonight,” said Mavericks Head Coach Scott Hillman. “Special teams were huge getting three power play goals and not giving them any.”

The first period was the most uneventful period of the game. Only one goal was scored on a combined sixteen shots. That lone goal came 1:58 into the period, when Sebastien Thinel ripped a shot from the blue line and sailed it past, Americans’ goaltender, Aaron Dell. The Americans did have an opportunity to score when Tim McKinzey was tripped up and given a penalty shot. McKizey took the shot but was blocked by, Mavericks’ goaltender, Mathieu Corbiel. The Mavericks were still leading with two minutes left in the period when Kenton Miller and Jason Deitsch dropped the gloves and fought. Miller won the fight when he dropped Deitsch to the ice. After the fight, both players were assessed five minute majors and were sent off for the rest of the period.

The Mavericks were leading 1-0 when the second period started. After sixteen minutes of back-and-forth play, Americans’, Kale Kerbashian scored on a great set-up pass from Drew Daniels. Just two minutes later, the Mavericks took the lead again, when Dave Pszenyczny sent a wrist-shot into the goal from the blue line. The goal was assisted by Ryan Jardine and Trevor Kell. The second period came to an end after another two minutes of play with the Mavericks leading 2-1.

When the third period started, the Mavericks were ready to extend their lead even more. It took seven and a half minutes before the Mavericks scored their first goal of the period. The goal was scored by Kenton Miller and was assisted by Kellen Tochkin and Sebastien Thinel.  Less then two minutes later, the Mavericks capitalized again when Andrew Courtney received a strong set-up from Sebastien Thinel and tapped the puck into the goal. The fifth and final Mavericks goal was scored at the 10:59 mark in the third period.  Kellen Tochkin scored by hitting the puck off the boards and into the net. This goal was assisted by Evan Zych and J.P Testwuide. After nine more minutes of play, the game concluded with the Mavericks on top 5-1.

Kellen Tochkin, Sebastien Thinel and Trevor Kell all had two points tonight leading the Mavericks too a strong victory and showing the skills that were stopped in the first two games against the Rapid City Rush. The Mavericks are playing better and better in every game. Only six players failed to get a point in this game. The team is meshing when they need to and are on a five game winning streak. The play is looking like it did in early December when the Mavericks had their eight game winning streak and it needs to continue throughout this series.
