USA Men’s Team Wins First with the New Roster

Tonight the USMNT took on Scotland in an international friendly at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Florida. Even though this game was friendly, the US team still took it seriously. Preparing for June 8th, when the USMNT play their first qualifying match, they need to be ready.

The game was good from the start of play.  Scotland received the first half kick-off. Scotland took the ball down the field but Geoff Cameron quickly won it back and delivered a pass to, captain, Carlos Bocanegra. Landon Donovan scored the first goal in the 5th minute on a rebounded block from Scottish goal keeper Allan McGregor. After Jermaine Jones delieverd a crossing pass to Michael Bradley, Bradley shot and scored from 35 yards out extending the lead to 2-0. While trying to deflect a kick away from his goal, Geoff Cameron scored on his own goal as this was the only Scotland would concede. At the 28th minute Carlos Bocanegra conceded the first and only yellow card of the game on a bad foul. Before the end of the first half, Maurice Edu made an astounding tackle on Scotland’s, Captain, Kenny Miller. The United States led 2-1 after the one minute of added time to the first half came to a close.

The United States started with the ball in the second half, the team drove the ball down the field only to be rejected by Allan McGregor. The first substitution came in the 50th minute when Scotland’s Don Cowie replaced Barry Bannan. Scotland then took the ball downfield and played a dangerous cross but Tim Howard made an extraordinary save to stop Scotland from scoring. Scotland used their second substitution in the 58th minute when Steven Whittaker came in for James McArther. Then a minute later, in the 59th, Scotland replaced Phil Bardsley with Russell Martin. After this sub, Landon Donovan scored his second goal on the night after a pass by Jermaine Jones. Shortly after the goal, in the 62nd minute, the United States subbed in three players. Oguchi Onyewu, Herculez Gomez, and Kyle Beckerman replaced Carlos Bocanegra, Terrence Boyd and Maurice Edu. After all the changing, in the 64th minute, Landon Donovan scored his hat trick goal on an amazing pass by Michael Bradley. Less than five minutes after the goal, in the 68th minute, the United States brought in, rookie mid-fielder, Joe Corona for Jose Torres. After the sub, in the 69th minute, Jermaine Jones scored the final goal on a pass from Landon Donovan, making the game 5-1. After the goal, Brad Guzan replaced Tim Howard for the United States final sub. Scotland used their last subs in the 81st minute switching Christophe Berra and Craig Smith for Andy Webster and Shaun Maloney. After one minute was added to the second half, Scotland had one more chance to score but were blocked by Brad Guzan ending the game with a 5-1 win.
