We’re Going to the Playoffs; Sporting KC Clinches Win for a Playoff Spot

Last Friday was a must win for Sporting KC as they tied 0-0 the week before to Montreal. Sporting KC started the game playing very well scoring within the first 10 minutes.  A goal came in the 10th, when Graham Zusi delivered a great shot to the back right corner of the goal. The goal was the major event of the first half.  Graham Zusi’s thoughts on the first half were,

“I thought the first half, especially, the defensive effort, was very good from the guys up top to the guys in the back and it really didn’t allow them to do anything offensively in the first half.”

Sporting KC came out flashing in the second half and it capitalized at the end of the half when Graham Zusi scored again on an almost twin like shot clinching the game and “Extinguishing the Fire”. Sporting KC clinched a playoff spot with the win and Peter Vermes later said,

“It absolutely was a goal, it’s another one we check off at the bottom of our list; we’re making our way up. The next thing would be to win the division so we have home field advantage through the playoffs if we’re still fortunate to keep moving forward so if we’re still in that position hopefully we can continue to keep the Supporter’s Shield in our grasp.”

Sporting KC has three games left and are aiming for the Supporter’s Shield but will have a big battle with the now leading, San Jose Earthquakes. SKC could win the Supporter’s Shield but the Earthquake have a one game lead. If SKC win the Supporter’s Shield and the MLS Cup, they will be the only team ever to win all three trophies. Sporting KC’s Kei Kamara’s thoughts on this are,

“We haven’t given it up yet. At the beginning of the season we highlighted some goals. The U.S. Open Cup was one of them, and the Supporter’s Shield is one of them. We’ve still got a couple games to go.”
